A 34-year-old Epworth man attempted to commit suicide after attacking his wife with a hammer following a domestic dispute last week.
Prosper Mbango reportedly consumed rat poison intending to commit suicide after assaulting his wife with a hammer on the forehead.
Mbango was arrested and appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa charged with attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
He was remanded on his hospital bed at Harare Central Hospital and the matter was remanded to March 8.
The State, represented by Sebastian Mutizirwa alleges that on February 20, in Epworth the couple had a misunderstanding after the complainant told Mbango that she no longer loves him.
It was reported that Mbango left the house but later returned then pushed open the door which was not locked and found the complainant asleep.
The State further alleges that Mbango used an unknown blunt object to assault the complainant on her left eye before hitting her twice with a hammer on the forehead.
The complainant sustained a swollen right eye and a fracture on the skull.
She is currently admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where she is receiving treatment.
Mbango then burnt the property worth US$800 that was in their bedroom.
It is also alleged that Mbango consumed rat poison intending to commit suicide and is currently admitted at Harare Central Hospital.
