The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on health and child care is pushing to reduce the age of sexual consent from 16 to 12.
Portfolio Committee on Health and Child Care last weekend were suggesting the age limit to be reduced to 12 triggering a massive verbal battle from women’s rights activists who are actually lobbying for the age to be pushed to 18.
The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health and Child Care Honorable Ruth Labode (MP)set the issue straight on the Parliamentary Committee not to make a suggestion to the effect of reducing the age of consent from 16 to 12.
The first suggestion was that there should be an increase from 16 to 18 following the definition of a child provided in section 81 of the Constitution. However in being particular to the right to health provided in section 76 of the supreme law, the members in the committee were of the view that the access to medical attention for sexually active minors be reduced from 16 to 12.
The aim is to allow access to sexual reproductive health to minors without obstruction of the condition of being accompanied by an adult.
She assured the nation that action will be taken to focus on how to protect children rather than exposing them.
