47 people died while 61 others were injured when two buses collided near Rusape tollgate on Wednesday evening.
It is reported that it was not head on collision but a side swipe as the other bus was intact at the front and at the back. The two buses were Bolt-Cutter and Smart. The injured people are being treated at Rusape General Hospital. The Presidents of both political parties send their condolences to the families of the deceased.
President Emmerson Munangagwa said that his thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
“Last night a heartbreaking tragedy occurred on Harare-Mutare road. The great loss of life, the pain and the anguish of the families and victims are today felt by the entire nation. At this difficult time, we must come together and government will ensure the injured receive the treatment they need, the victims the support they deserve.
“We will be there for you and as we move forward it is important it is incumbent upon us to investigate how this happened and draw the relevant insights and implement tough new regulations to make these tragic incidents a thing of the past,” said Mnangagwa.
President of the opposition party (M.D.C) Nelson Chamisa also said:
“My prayers are with the bereaved families and friends who have lost their loved ones in the tragedy. It’s saddening. I pray for the injured to get well soon. Government must move in to assist all the injured and deceased families during this trying trime. Rest In Peace our departed.”
