Tendai biti the Vice Chairperson for the Movement for Democratic Change(MDC Alliance) has been found guilty for announcing the presidential election results for 2018 before the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission had done the honours.
Harare magistrate Gloria Takundwa has found Biti guilty of announcing results yet he is not a ZEC official. Magistrate Takundwa said the address at the conference constitutes the official announcement and it had an element to undermine ZEC.
While submitting mitigation, Muchadehama said “Biti was not the only person who pre-announced the results. President ED Mnangagwa and Paul Mangwana also did.”
Sentence has be passed on the first count, Biti has been sentenced to 7 days in prison which has been wholly suspended on the condition he pays $200 fine. On the second count, Biti has been sentenced to six months in prison which has been wholly suspended on the condition that he does not commit a similar offense.
Nelson Chamisa the president for the main opposition party MDC Alliance was also there to show his support for his party Vice Chairperson. There are still a lot of cases that are still to be given judgement which involve a lot of opposition officials.
