The late founder of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) President Morgan Tsvangirai’s memorial service date has been moved to May from this month due to unfavorable current situation in the country.
MDC spokesperson Jacob Mafume said the current situation in the country which is characterized by extra-judicial killings of activists is not conducive to hold the service.
“As a party, we are looking forward to giving our founding leader a befitting memorial. What is in doubt is the conditions currently prevailing in the country, whether there will be sufficient freedom of speech and freedom of movement. The conditions in the country right now are making it difficult for the party to organize but we are hoping we will be able to properly prepare and give our former leader a suitable memorial. We want to put a befitting memorial to Tsvangirai and thus, we changed the dates. This will give people ample time to prepare.”
Tsvangirai died at the age of 65, last year February on Valentine’s Day in South Africa after he suffered from colon cancer .His memorial service was supposed to be held this month, a year after his death.
