A bid to save a marriage backfired after an Epworth woman was arrested for strangling her new born baby to death.
The State alleges that Grace Mukwena, 23, was married to Proud Tole for the past four months when she was five months pregnant, having been impregnated by her former boyfriend Taurai Chagidza of Mutare.
When she got married to Tole she did not disclose to him that she was pregnant in a bid to protect her marriage.
On the 27th of April 2018 at around 3 am, it was reported that Mukwena experienced labour pains.
She reportedly went out to the toilet pretending as if she wanted to relieve herself.
The State alleges that whilst she was at the toilet she gave birth to a baby girl and strangled the baby to death.
Tole reportedly noted that Mukwena had taken long to return from the toilet, he followed to find out what had happened.
He discovered that Mukwena had given birth to a baby girl and the newly born was lifeless.
Tole reportedly informed some neighbours who reportedly wrapped the baby and they went to Epworth Poly Clinic.
At the clinic, the nurse checked on the child and discovered that she was already dead but had multiple injuries and bleeding from the nose and mouth.
The nurse then called the police leading to Mukwena’s arrest.
Mukwena was not asked to plead when she appeared before Harare magistrate Tilda Mazhande charged with infanticide.
She was advised to apply for bail at the High Court and the matter was remanded to May 10.
