Eleven members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police with rank of constables stationed in Harare were arrested in Borrowdale on October 10 after they allegedly tried to extort money from a businessman,Vaya Sanjay Keshavji who is into deals of buying and selling of gold.
The police details who were not officially deployed to this duty claims that they went to Borrowdale following a tip off from one of their members Constable Chidawa who is currently on suspension.
The ZRP constables teamed up and proceeded to House number 299 Borrowdale, using two cars, a black Nissan caravan and a cream Nissan Sunny both of them without registration number plates.Three of the constables were dressed in police riot gear and the rest were in their civilian attire.
It is reportedly that the team had waited outside the gate only to to gain entry after a client from Keshavji’s office drove away. They are said to have proceeded to the reception where they demanded Keshavji to supply documentations in relation to his gold business.
Although the team had identified themselves as police officers from Harare Central, Keshavji became suspicious and told them to wait at the reception and he proceeded to alert the police.
A reaction team from various departments including CID Homicide,CID Minerals,Flora and Fauna Unit, ZRP Support Unit and ZRP Borrowdale swiftly reacted and were able to apprehend the 11 constables.
