Harare woman impersonates BancABC in a loans ‘con’

A Harare woman, Sharon Chatambudza has left a dozen Zimbabwean women from an organisation Women In Life Transformation Zimbabwe reeling in debts and with shattered hopes of attending a Women empowerment conference in China early this month.

Sharon approached the would be victims at their Harare office while they were looking for financial help to meet their travelling and boarding expenses for the fateful trip. She made a pitch claiming her organisation, My Sister-My Friend works for and on behalf of BancABC to assist women get access to unsecured loan facilities as the bank’s empowerment of women’s enterprises.

This was a miracle the WILTZ ladies who wasted no time to sign up. Everything looked legitimate as Sharon produced official BacABC BancEasy forms and reiterated on all the details a bank would ask when applicants are filling up the forms. They were all then asked to lodge a loan application fee of $200.00 payable via her Ecocash account 0772723339. All that was left for the ladies to do was relax while they confirm tickets and hotel bookings.

It was only after the date of travel was passing and Sharon’s stories started to become colourful that the ladies began to be suspicious and quizzed her as to the legitimacy of the applications. Not getting convincing response from her, the team visited the Head Office of BancABC who distanced themselves from Sharon Chatambudza, her organisation and the purported forms which they dismissed as unauthentic.

“BancABC official loan application forms are serialised and they will have an official bank’s date stamp before they are let out to the public, this raises security concern” said an official from the bank’s loss prevention department.

Another official commented that the woman in question must be well conversed with the bank’s system to be able to have taken such bold moves, she must have inside intel. Coincidentally, Sharon’s sibling who we can not name for legal reasons is employed by the same bank and in the same department that receives and/or processes loan applications. Should this be a mere coincidence, her actions indeed prejudice her siblings working environment.

Contacted for her side of the story, sharon admitted she has no relationship with BancABC and was in the process of refunding the ladies. Few hours later, only four of the dozen received refunds while she claimed the rest have been refunded by transfer. Our crew requested for the proof of transfer and she could not send. Todate, none of the remaining ladies have received payment, she is either driving on the highway or hospitalised and immobile.

A report has been made at ZRP Central Police Station and referred to the Commercial Crime Unit.
