Five people died while twenty five others were injured after a Mistubishi lorry which was travelling towards Mutare lost control while descending a steep slope and veered off the road at the 54 km peg along Mutare -Burma road at around 1030 hours on Sunday morning.
The lorry was carrying twenty nine passengers and was allegedly ferrying them from a memorial service near the Mozambican boarder when it overturned several times before landing on its wheels
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident asserting that five died on the spot while twenty-five were injured and taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital.
“Five people died on the spot while twenty five others were injured .The injured were referred to Mutare Provincial Hospital where seventeen people were treated and discharged while others were admitted,” he said.
The police has also identified the names of the deceased who were carrried to Mutare Provincial Hospital Mortuary. The names are as follows;
Pepeginas Chaipa ,a female adult of Chigora village.
Sinikiwe Zingara a female adult of Madondo village under chief Zimunya Mutare
Irene Antonio female adult of NeHwangura village ,under Chief Zimunya,Mutare
Brenda Maringise femle adult
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urged motorist to observe stipulated speed limits and to take note of the roads and terrain when embarking on journeys.
